The Art Maze

Idea and concept

“The Art Maze” is an extraordinary art exhibition that opened in March 2022 on the famous helicopter platform of the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai – over 200 meters above sea level. Artist and philanthropist Sacha Jafri developed the project together with curator Marcus Schäfer to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage Program under the motto “The Next 50”.

On display were 30 original oil and acrylic paintings inspired by selected UNESCO World Heritage Sites, supplemented by a work depicting the Burj Al Arab itself. The centerpiece of the exhibition was a twelve by twelve meter steel labyrinth room – the “Maze”. It symbolizes the path of life, with different entrances but a common goal. Supported by virtual and augmented reality technologies, the exhibition could also be experienced beyond Dubai.

Realization

Preparations for “The Art Maze” began months before the opening. Sacha Jafri created the entire collection in just six intensive weeks – an artistic tour de force that underlined the special significance of the project.

The helicopter platform of the Burj Al Arab not only provided a spectacular backdrop, but also a statement: art overcomes boundaries, rises above conventions and connects people at a symbolic height.

The exhibition was reserved exclusively for invited guests – art lovers, collectors, philanthropists and decision-makers from all over the world. After the presentation in Dubai, “The Art Maze” was to go on a world tour, with stops in Paris at the UNESCO headquarters and in Nepal, among others.

Success

With the opening on the helicopter platform, “The Art Maze” made a strong statement. The combination of art, world heritage and innovation attracted international attention and turned the exhibition into a global event.

Sacha Jafri was guided by his own childhood memories: Trips to UNESCO World Heritage Sites shaped his view of culture and humanity. His works are intended to revive precisely this connection – and at the same time build a bridge between the past and the future.

The response was enormous: the unusual location, the emotional message and the fusion of real and virtual experience made “The Art Maze” a milestone in modern art projects. With the subsequent world tour, the exhibition developed into a traveling monument to cultural heritage and artistic vision.
