Global Gate project

Idea and concept

The Global Gate is the largest mobile work of art in the world. It consists of 37 standardized sea containers stacked in the shape of the Brandenburg Gate, forming a monumental installation 21 meters high and 24 meters wide. The idea was developed by art curator Marcus Schäfer, inspired by his son, who once built a replica of the Brandenburg Gate using toy containers. This playful moment gave rise to the vision of making art visible beyond traditional galleries – in the middle of public spaces. After stops in Frankfurt and Dubai, the Global Gate made its first guest appearance in Hamburg in the fall of 2023.

Realization

From mid-October to mid-November 2023, the Global Gate was located directly at the Cruise Center Altona and was designed entirely in the spirit of Otto Waalkes. Under the motto “Hello Hamburg – Hello Otto!”, the East Frisian transformed the façade of the containers into a humorous art gallery. With his famous Ottifants, he reinterpreted classics such as Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa”, Vermeer’s “The Girl with the Pearl Earring” and Klimt’s “The Kiss” in an unmistakable way. The gate was crowned by a three-dimensional quadriga of four ottifants over three meters high.

The construction was a logistical masterpiece: a large crane precisely positioned the containers weighing several tons, secured with sand ballast, supports and water tanks. Within just a few days, a stable structure was built that could withstand the challenges of the port location. Sustainability played a major role here – the containers are sourced from the city where the site is located and remain there. The artistically printed textile banners can also be recycled or sold.

More Information

With its mixture of pop culture, art history and sustainability, the project succeeded in making art tangible and accessible – right in the heart of the city. The Global Gate with Otto Waalkes was therefore far more than just a temporary installation: it became a symbol of Hamburg’s openness and a colorful gateway to art.

Success

The Global Gate Hamburg was a real crowd-puller. Visitors of all ages were enthralled by the combination of monumental architecture, contemporary art and Otto’s unmistakable humor. The oversized Ottifants in particular brought a smile and numerous souvenir photos.
