Inaugurated in 1973, the Sydney Opera House is a great architectural work of the 20th century, combining a variety of creative and innovative aspects in both architectural form and structural design. A magnificent urban sculpture set in a remarkable waterscape at the tip of a peninsula jutting out into Sydney Harbour, the building has had a lasting impact on architecture. The Sydney Opera House consists of three groups of interlocking arched ‘shells’ covering two main halls and a restaurant. These shells are arranged on a large platform and surrounded by terraces that serve as pedestrian walkways. When an international jury commissioned Danish architect Jørn Utzon to build the Sydney Opera House in 1957, it represented a radical new approach to construction.
