Timbuktu, home to the prestigious Sankore Koranic University and other madrasas, was an intellectual and spiritual capital in the 15th and 16th centuries and a center for the spread of Islam throughout Africa. The three large mosques Djingareyber, Sankore and Sidi Yahia are reminiscent of the golden age of Timbuktu. Although they are constantly being restored, these monuments are now threatened by desertification.
