Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. The Angkor Archaeological Park covers an area of 400 km², including forested areas, and is home to the magnificent remains of the various capitals of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to 15th centuries. These include the famous temple of Angkor Wat and, in Angkor Thom, the Bayon temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has launched a comprehensive program to protect this symbolic site and its surroundings.
